Notorious from 3.08-3.30

The protagonists choice of clothing connote that he is a ‘geek’, we conclude this because of the attention to detail towards having a most gentlemanly approach. This can be seen from the shirt- the top button of it is done with a complimentary tie to match. Also, all the buttons his cardigan are done. The audience can see that he is carrying a school bag. We identify with the character and relate. We recognise that the main protagonist is portrayed to be a hard working student.

The close up used of the protagonists face emphasises hatred. As the audience see directly what he’s looking at, this ensures that the audience make a direct link with his feelings. This connotes that drug dealers are frowned upon in society, and explicitly shows that the young protagonist can see a clear difference from right and wrong.

Genre of crime and thriller (originally rated X) this film was produced both in Hollywood and in Britain, by Stanley Kubrick. This film was released 13/01/1972, in the U.K; it was released two week later in the U.S. It was made using a budget of $2.2 million and in turn achieved a huge revenue of $26,489,400. I think the main target audience for this film were men shown to be at a level from B-E on the demographic scale, this is because the film was rated 18. Also, because of adult themes and extreme violence, and so stereotypically men would have been targeted. With concern to physographics the film may have been targeted at the –resigned and strugglers. This is because all people in these groups have one thing in common- they are wasting their life, therefore can relate to the protagonists.
As the audience, using Todorov’s theory, we can tell that the fight scene is the beginning of the disequilibrium. Disequilibrium is where all harmony is broken by evil forces. Also, using Propp’s theory the audience can identify the four men- the protagonists, to be the villains.
Mise-en-scene refers to what can be seen by the audience in the actual frame. It sets a mood and enlightens the audience of the characters, and sets an overall theme. The setting of the scene looks to be near some river side residence. The actors are shown to be walking down the pavement. This connotes realism, as the audience has all walked down a pavement, although when in relation to this scene enigma codes are created as the audience are eager to find out why the three men are represented the way they are by the director- threatening, anti-social and silly when considering the costumes.
Props used include knives and batons. These connote violence in the very beginning of the scene and therefore the audience must brace themselves, as violence is expected. (This is likely to cause catharsis)This is later shown to be true, although the audience do not expect the friends to fight as violently with each other as they do.
Costumes worn by the men are white jumpsuits and black top hats and black boots. This connotes that the men are rebels of some sort; this is concluded as you don’t expect to see grown men dressed like that in the street. Also, all men are wearing crotch pads, this is purely strange. The audience question themselves whether to take the men seriously or respect them because they have a unique style. Personally, I feel that the men are ludicrously stupid.
Facial expression on the characters faces are of sadness when they are getting beaten by their friend. Although, when they are walking as a group they look united and have serious facial expressions, but they cannot be taken seriously as their faces connote that they must be intoxicated due to the cheeky smirks expressed, which cannot be justified. The four characters are wearing hats; therefore we cannot see their hair. But, when in the river, the audience can tell that the men have short, scruffy hair. This confirms suspicions of the men being uneducated and therefore are represented as ‘strugglers’- people who seek escape from the world and probably do so by taking drugs. Also, makeup of the characters is done to ensure the characters have a natural complexion.
Lighting in this clip is of a key light. This is the brightest and makes the characters stand out. It automatically attracts the audience’s attention to the four characters in the scene and makes them the subject of the frame. Key lighting can be directed from various angles. In this specific clip top lighting is used, this again, helps makes the four characters stand out, connoting that they are the dominant subject of the frame- this creates enigma codes for the audience. A sense of mystery is made about the four men and the audience begin to wonder- who they are? What they’re doing? For what reason? High key lighting is used by the director. This enables the frame to look more realistic and connote sunny weather. By doing so, the audience can conclude that the film is not of the horror genre and could be an uplifting comedy; although as the film advances the audience are enlightened.
Sound is arguably the most important factor in a film. It includes dialogue and sound effects. These both contribute to how the audience interpret the scene and therefore cannot be compromised. In this clip non diegetic sound is present. It comes from both the voice over narrating, and the classical music being played. The classical music is of contrapuntal sound- as it is something we would not normally associate with the scene. In this case, classical music would not be related to violence. Although, when being played showing the men walking, it connotes some sort of victory, for example, the men have triumphed in a fight. This view is soon shown to be wrong, as the men fight violently, with each other. In this clip, there is no sound bridge present as the clip is shown to be one recorded long shot. This creates a sense of realism. As everyday you are aware of people walking down the street.
Cinematography is the working of camera framing and camera movement. Camera framing in this scene starts with a long shot of the men walking towards the camera. This connotes a sense of threat and enigma codes are made- where are the men walking to? This mystery is later unravelled when they start fighting. At 0.48 the camera shot changes and a medium close up is used. It focuses on a man’s boot kicking the pelvic area of another man. This sudden change into violence encourages catharsis- when the audience engage in violence. However, the media effects are negative; some of the audience may be disheartened by the sudden change to violence. Later, the same effects are made when a man slices his friends hand with a knife at 1.17.
A tracking shot is where the camera moves along a track. In the beginning of the scene a tracking shot is used, when the shot looks like the men are walking towards you, the camera is moving backwards. Panning is also used from 0.51- 1.01, then the camera switches to a low angle shot-this connotes that the man is dominant and superior over the over three men. Then, a high angle shot is used to focus on the knife he pulls out then stabs his friend with. The camera alternates many times throughout the time of 1.02-1.40, moving from high angle to low angle shots.
Editing is the joining of the different shots to produce a scene. The editing can vary in style depending on the mood and theme of the film. There are about 10 shot in this scene. The most used is a straight cut, this type of cut is the most popular, and they are used so that the audience rarely notice them. This is the best type of shot as it fails to break up the main scene, and therefore does not damage the quality of the scene. It makes the scene look like one long, continuous shot. In this scene there is no use of continuity editing. Continuity editing is when shots are placed logically so that one event follows the other; this is a good technique to use as it enables the audience to follow the story line without any difficulty. As well, there are no montages used, a montage is where shots relative to each other are shown, this provides an overall impression of what they director is trying to convey.

Extension Task (Question 2)

This image shows a close up. By using this image it creates enigma codes and because of this a sense of mystery is made, questioning the audience- who is this man? He looks like a villain. The main effect of this image is that it makes the Joker look scary and intimidating and the media effects include- a face which will stay in your mind forever.

This image demonstrates a long shot in the movie Paranormal Activity. It is used to show everything in the screen so the audience are aware of the familiar surroundings. The long shot is also used to show tension and suspense- what are the audience waiting for? what will happen? these questions are also a part of the enigma codes and possibly action codes as the audience are aware that this image will hold some key information in the future of the film (in this case this is true).

This image is an extreme close up of an eye taken from the film Avatar. The use of the extreme close up creates a mystery for the audience as part of the enigma codes and encourages a sense hidden identity.

This image demonstrates a low angle shot. It is taken from the film Adulthood. Using this pose connotes the three characters being superior and dominant, creating a sense of importance. Also, the Media effects are that - the audience are scared of the characters and intimidated.

'Touch of evil' (1958) Orson Welles

1. Discuss how the cinematography contributes to the telling of the story and the build up of suspense.

Firstly, the establishing shot is a close up of a mans hand setting a timer on a bomb. This builds up suspense as the audicene is aware that a tragedy and it also connotes that death will occur. Then a point of view shot is used from the bombers point of view. This also biulds up suspence as then enigma codes within the audince start up. They question who may be a witness to this, also we recognise that this scene will act as an action code.

2. Consider how the music and the cinematography and the sound work together.

The main music played throughout the scene is jazz music. This is upbeat and connotes happiness and fun. Also, there is no sound from any of the characters until the chracters reach some kind of a depot. The sound is diagetic sound as it is from a character in the film world. Then the cinematography used establishes that two couples are being targeting, especially the rich couple- they are the target of the bomb. Camera movements used are a crane shot, it show who is getting in the car which the bomb is in.

Light Analysis

There seems to be one key light in this picture. This is connoted by to bright light.

Top lighting is used in this picture to show all the features of the actors, especially their actions and their facial expressions. By using this lighting it allows there to be much brightness and connote a true hospital environment.

Also, there is high key lighting used. This allows the picture to be seen more brighter and it also helps to develop the contrast between the light and dark.

Image Analysis

COSTUME- the men are dressed in everyday clothes

LIGHTING- high key lighting has been used in this image, there are clear bold colour shown.

ACTORS- they are fighting violently, punches are being thrown which act as the main focus of the image.

MAKE UP- red coloured make up is used on the characters in this image and connotes anger.

PROPS- there are no props in this image.

SETTING- looks like a wasteland, near an industrial site, as you can see industrial factory type building in the background.

Kill Bill 2

Clip starts from 0.00- 2.00

Editing- firstly fade cuts are used. This is expected as it is the beginning of the film and must slowly begin to make the audience aware of the next scenes. The editing also includes straight cuts when a scene of violence has ended, it normally resumes to the narrative in black and white.

Sound- in this film clip causes suspense, diegetic sound is in the form of the characters talking and non diegetic sound is in the form of the narrator telling the audience the story line.

The camerawork- the camera uses close up shots in the beginning as the victims face in shown to be in suffering. In this scene a stedicam shot is used to make the audience think that they are witnessing the violence first hand.
Camera movement includes panning as well, when the victim is shown to be dead.

Mise en scene- in this clip the costumes after not the main focus of the scene, the violence and storyline is. From watching the two minutes I can identify the costumes to be a women wearing a fitted leather jacket as seen at 0.55.

Lighting in this scene is low, and the colour of the film is in black and white. These are good colours to use as they connote death, violence and misery.

Acting of all characters in the beginning demonstrates a women begging for her life. This is very serious and the close up shot focuses on the face to exploit the emotions and feelings which can be read on the women’s face, being scared

Make up used on the protagonist makes her look beaten and bruised. This empathises the look of violence and death. At 0.55 the make up makes the same women look well and healthy. Make up helps show the contrast in the emotions in the different scenes, on the same character.

Setting of the scene vary from a dark space on the floor, to a setting of a bridge with trees and countryside around her in the background where the women is shown to be driving her car.

Green Street

www.youtube.com/watch?v=20otmae7x9c

Clip starts from 1.00-3.00

Editing- jump cuts are used in the clips shown from the big gang fight focus on every person individually, this emphasises the fight and damage to the people. After a punch is shown the camera quickly moves to another character, although actions are shown in slow motion, making the fight more realistic as it connotes the real life fast pace movement and actual injury.

Sound- there are slow, mellow songs being played in the background. This is unexpected as when the audience view violence, we expect to hear high volume, fast paced music with heavy bass and a very upbeat melody. The use of the slow songs work well with the slow motioned scene. The songs played are in a low tone and saddening themselves with words like- “and I fell to the ground”. These phrases work especially well with the fight as at the same time a person falls to the ground being beaten.

The camerawork- it starts from a long shot and then tracking shots are used to zoom in on the people’s face when they are getting beaten, to focus on facial the expressions. Blood, punches, head butts and kicks are clearly shown in slow motion to connote a real fight and bloody violence.

Mise en scene- costumes worn are normal everyday clothes which you would expect to wear on the weekend, very casual. The most worn garments on this scene are dark coloured jeans and hooded tops.
Lighting in this scene is very low and dark, mainly to connote the dull fighting which is occurring. When someone is injured and bleeding the blood is shown to be a rich red colour. This effect is used to show that in the dark surroundings injury to people is damaging them and all is not tranquil as the environment firstly was.
Acting of all characters is very violent and connotes anger and hatred. This is backed up by the acting when every single character shown is beating some one of the opposite side, demonstrating real hatred.
Make up used in the film is only to highlight bruises on the face and red blood stains along with broken bones. Using make up in this way adds to the effect of people being injured and scared for life.
Setting in this scene is firstly shown to be very tranquil and quiet. Then suddenly very loud and bloody. This highlights that in very short time circumstance can change. The fight itself is shot in a waste land park, this is like real life as police are unlikely to find out about the fight taking place, infecting the outcomes.

This scene causes moral panic as the audience are aware that the fighting is due to football, a well known sport in the country.

Secondly, this leads to catharsis as the audience are watching this violence and are suddenly made to wonder if they would do the same to people if they disagreed with them.

Desensitization also takes place as the audience are watching violence. This last fight I have chosen to analyse does not effect the audience at a great scale as they have witnessed previous fights in the film and also in real life.

The audience are forced in to Moral panic. Anybody watching violence of this kind should be concerned, especially if they are football fans, as the audience are aware that this is a true representation of most of the football team fans, they again question themselves and start to doubt- ‘should I go and watch my team play if I know that this kind of violence takes place, what if I end up dead like these men?’

Media effects may lead to the fans of football not going to watch their team play live in the stadiums as they are shown the real life stories of some hooligans, and what levels they will go to injure someone on the opposite

Film Analysis- IL Divo

IL Divo is an Italian arthouse film. "It is a stylistically gorgeous, seductive and very funny portrait of Italian politician Giulio Andreotti, whose ability to hold on to power despite everything (including a murder charge) makes him one of the most fascinating figures of the last century".

It is of the comedy and docu-drama genre's. It is aimed at the elder more mature adult aged 24+, of A/B groups in the demographic scale, as it contains dense political and love themes. It also appeals to the reform type of people as the film enlightens them about the life of someone.

The media effects ensure that the audience are aware of the life of Giulio Andreotti.

Lastly, the poster itself connotes a gangster themes, in which the main character is hidden to cause mystery within the audience, so they question themselves- who the man shown?

Film Analysis- Jennifer's Body

This is a mainstream film, starring famous Hollywood actors like Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfries as printed in bold capitals on the poster.

It is a comedy/ horror film. The main Protagonist is played by Megan Fox who is a vampire.

It is aimed at student aged 16-24, rated an 'E' in the demographic scale, as is focuses on life during high school, this means that the audience is very limited, although due to it being a comedy/ horror it appeals to the audience as it makes them laugh and scared at the same time.

The audience are most likely to be explores as they would seek discovery within the film, questioning them selves what it would be like to be a vampire.

Zero

A real life, awakening story. The stereotypical protagonist girl finds herself to be too fat for the modelling agency. She explores the ways to lose the weight and become a model. Although, she is not brave enough to rethink her dream- despite it meaning that she may die.

I think this movie trailer is very powerful and is aimed at the youthful audience of 16-24 year old females. It aims to grab the female audiences attention by displaying how life can change so dramatically once you have your heart set on something, knowing it may end your life. It demonstrates pure passion and the evil that comes with it.

Who's Bad

The story itself show the life of the geek trying to get 'laid', despite his best efforts he makes no progress and gets teased by the masculine, alpha males.

This film focuses on the protagonist being a stereotypical geek. The audience targeted is 16-24 year old's both males and females, although it has a larger appeal to males as the protagonist is a male.

Do images of skinny models have an impact?

Yes, they do. It engages the audience to feel catharsis, not engaging in violence but hatred and anger. These images demonstrate inhumane bodies with no fat, muscle or any benefit what so ever, apart from a job you risk your life for. But is a job were you risk your life everyday worth it?

Sensationalising from the tabloid newspapers does not take place, as this refers to exaggeration. When such a delicate subject is in the media spotlight no amount of attention can ever be enough. Models lives are in danger. This encourages moral panic, as the audience will know models, who are in this condition and are happy with it. This will lead to the audience urging the models to change their ways and to become healthier in order to live a normal, healthy life. their are no benefits of this lifestyle what so ever.

Media effects of this make the audience rebel and petition against this style of modeling. This can simply be done by not purchasing goods from a company who use 'anorexic' models. This will force the companny to change their models and listen to the audience.

Does watching violence produce violence?

In some cases catharsis takes place. There have been several cases in the world where youths have seen or played games aged 18+ which demonstrate strong violence. This has lead to the savage deaths of innocent people. For example, a 17 year old boy murdered a 14 year old because he wanted to re-in act what he did on a computer game. He battered the 14 year old to death for no reason, this has lead to the computer game 'Manhunt' - to be withdrawn from sale in the U.K.

Although, if the correctly aged audience are to witness this, the media effects would be minimal. We as society would have nothing to worry about. This would be because the audience will be smart enough, and be desensitised to what they have seen, they would know the obvious difference between right and wrong, this would lead them not to re-in act it. Secondly, playing or watching computer games like this fulfills the persons curiosity and makes them see the consequences without putting anybody at danger. Therefore, these types of games are not to blame, but are the people who watch/play them and commit the crimes.

12C2 Cover Work

Hollyoaks Analysis

1) The programme is non linear, there is no resolution at the end. This is not typical of its genre, as it is a teenage drama the audience expect happiness, rather than a depressing end to have no good outcome.

2) The protagonist is Newt, an EMO style male character, he is communicated as a schizophrenic mad man. We identify the main character by his type of clothes and make up, also viewing his conversations with his imaginary friend.

3) The action codes included are shown in flashbacks and demonstrates an attack on a person who was not liked, and the protagonist is the accused, this connotes the reasoning for the protagonist to run away and be very cautious and dangerously schizophrenic.

4) The enigma codes are flashbacks from certain characters views, by using these enigma codes the audience are kept in suspense to see the possible outcome.

5) The equilibrium is practically non existent, it is again a flashback to when the accused was home and safe with his friend having a sneaky drink. The disequilibrium is shown when the main character is put back into reality by his imaginary friend, and the main character quickly snaps out of the trance he was under. The new equilibrium has not been exposed, as of yet.

Which character plays what part in Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone?

1) The villain is Voldermort. He is established in the books but is not payed by a character in this film, this is kept a secret to create some kind of a mystery for the audience.

2) The donor is Professor Dumbledore. He is constantly giving Harry advice on his school life and his private life. He is played by Richard Harris in this film.

3) The helpers in the book are Ronald Weasley played by Rupert Grint and Hermionie Granger played by Emma Watson. they pursue the adventures with Harry and also provide support and advice.

4) The dispatcher in the book is Harry himself as he chooses to take on the adventure. In the film he is played by Daniel Radcliffe.

5) The hero is also Harry as he always wins the battle against evil. He is always the under dog, but as soon as he is considered dead he comes back and shocks us all.

6) The false hero is Draco Malfoy. He sum how assures himself and his demented friends that he is the hero and just wishes he could be in harry's position- being popluar and good at everything, despite Harry's non existant, depressing childhood.

Wednesday 30 September 2009

The Sun newspapwer is a tabloid newspaper. The headline is 'Here We Goal'. This connotates that it is aimed at football, or a mens sports game. The use of the naked women also connotates that it is aimed at men as this is a turn on, grabbing their attention.

The caption confirms that the paper are show casing football as "cheer the lads into world cup finals" connotates that the mens football team have triumphed and arer fully supported by the paper and it's buyers.

The use of the black background makes the model stand out as she is wearing white, and holding a white banner. The type of shot is a meduim long shot- as the picture shows the models whole body.

Friday 25 September 2009

The main colours in this image are black and white. The main focus of the image is a footballer in red. Having a black and white theme connotates sadness and creates a dull setting which leads to the connotating to the footballer serving the purpose of a super hero, flying through the air, catching the audiences attention.

The pose of the footballer connotates greatness and skill, as he is obviously liked, being in the air supported by fans. It enables the audience to think that if they wear 'adidas' clothes and play football they will be able to achieve the same thing as the footballer- being popular and skilled at football.

The image itself contains a digitally edited picture of a footballer in mid air, on a hand drawn painted picture of oriental men reaching for the footballer. This connotates that the men wish to be like him and are reaching for him. The vast number of men reaching for him are shown to be in the horizon which establishes a sense of neediess and jelously.

The size if the image indicates that it is a big poster to be placed near motorways to maximise the amount of views. It is made not only for football fans, but fans of art and the Olympics, as that is the reason for the advertisement itself. It also connotates superiority of the Olympics, against local football matches which are not advertised greatly to this scale.

The top right corner has the Olympics emblem. This is known worldwide and therefore the advertisement serves it's puropes of being eye catching and advertising the Olympics.

The type of shot used is a medium shot. This is used as it shows the surrounding aswell as the main feature. Although, we as an audience can relate to the popularity of football, the setting of the image itself is unidentifiable, as the background illustrates men reaching for the footballer, coming from the horizon.

The lighting on the image seems to be coming from behind the footballer shining towards the audience. Therefore, you first see the footballer dressed in 'adidas' performing supernaturally. Also, the strapline 'impossible is nothing' connotates that the supernatural acts of the footballer can also be performed by the 'average joe's' in the audience. This again, tempts the audience to buy 'adidas' merchandise.

In conclusion, the advertisement promotes 'adidas' as a brand and also promotes the Olympics. As the last Olympics were in Beijing- the use of the oriental men is a wise choice, as it is directly aimed at the Oriental audience, making them believe 'impossible is nothing'.

Pride

The above production is a previous media student's courework. I am unaware of their grade although I am sure they received a very high grade, as it is of very high quality and looks professional.

The genre of the film is gangster. It connotates the gang life in which young adults are forced into- taking part in illegal operations, leading to illegal money, and eventually murder.

The camera work is also of very high quality. It demonstrates zoom shots on the murder victims face and the suspects face, this shows to the audience who is the victim and what has been done to them and by who.

The production companies used were 'Miramax Films' and 'Blood For Blood production'. These are Hollywood production labels, and focus on action and crime films. They are able to do so well as they have very high budgets. This film would have been shown in a cinema and not on television, alhtough when shown on television- past the watershed as it contains bad language and scenes of violence.

I suppose the audience to watch this film is the sterotypical action craving man aged over 18 and possibly very cool women, as it shows real life and an unfortunate ending, rather than a HAPPY CINDERRELLA ENDING!

The film itself starts from a death, so it is basically a flash back. No boring cliffhangers just a plain, simple and good storyline.

This film is not for the faint hearted. If you can stand violence, bad language and death scenes- then this is possibly the best film out since THE GODFATHER. If not BETTER THAN 'THE GODFATHER'.

OH YES!.
